Frisco And Plano Infertility
Infertility is defined as one year of unprotected sexual intercourse on a regular basis
without conception. It affects approximately 10-15% of couples in the reproductive age group
which makes it an important component of a gynecologist’s practice.
Becoming pregnant and birthing
a child is truly a miracle. Pregnancy can be one of the most wonderful times in a woman’s
life, but achieving this goal is often not as easy as expected. A gynecologist is trained to
evaluate and often treat women who are unable to conceive. Sometimes evaluation is warranted
sooner than in one year, such as in the case of a woman who is approaching her mid-30’s.
Basic
infertility evaluation consists of testing both partners, of which male factor infertility can
be the cause 40% of the time. Semen analysis is usually the only test needed to evaluate the
reproductive ability of the man. Women need to undergo a few timed laboratory tests to determine
if there is an underlying endocrine condition which may be affecting her fertility and monthly
ovulation. Other tests for the woman should include evaluation of the female pelvic organs for
structural or obstructive abnormalities usually in the form of a pelvic examination, ultrasound,
hysterosalpingography, hysteroscopy and/or laparoscopy, as well as culture testing for
infections.
When these basic tests are performed, usually 85-90% of time an etiology to the
infertility is discovered and can be treated. Unfortunately, this will still leaves 10-15% of
couples who will then be classified as unexplained infertility.
Infertility Treatment Options
With the incredible advances with reproductive technologies, infertility can be treated in
most cases. Medical and surgical treatments are available for the 85-90% of couples who have
a diagnosis for the etiology to their infertility. Ovulation induction with timed intercourse
may be assisted with use of a number of medications specifically formulated for this reason.
Sperm washings and timed intrauterine insemination is usually the first invasive treatment
option once medical or surgical treatments have been considered or used.
