Infertility

Infertility is defined as the absence of conception after a year of regular unprotected sexual intercourse, impacting approximately 10-15% of couples in the reproductive age group. For a gynecologist, addressing infertility becomes a significant aspect of practice, emphasizing the complexities many face on the journey to parenthood.

While pregnancy is often hailed as a miraculous experience, the reality is that achieving this milestone can be more challenging than anticipated. Gynecologists are well-equipped to assess and treat women struggling with conception, sometimes initiating evaluations earlier, particularly for those approaching their mid-30s.

A basic infertility evaluation involves testing both partners, with male factor infertility accounting for 40% of cases. Semen analysis serves as a key indicator of male reproductive ability. For women, timed laboratory tests are conducted to assess potential endocrine factors affecting fertility. Additional tests include evaluations of pelvic organs through procedures like ultrasound, hysterosalpingography, hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, and culture testing for infections.

There is Hope!

Advances in reproductive technologies offer hope for couples facing infertility. Medical and surgical treatments address diagnosed causes, and assisted reproductive options come into play when needed.
